Friedensreich Hundertwasser, born in Austria and living in New Zealand until his death in 2000, was one of the most popular artists of the 20th century. He is widely known for his boldly-coloured paintings and his individual architectural designs, which incorporate natural features of the landscape.

He was a pioneer in many areas: his architectural models of the early 1970s are already guiding principles for the greening and forestation of cities, for improving human beings’ living conditions and quality of life. He was one of the first to raise his voice against environmental pollution, against the dangers of nuclear energy, against the destruction of our natural heritage.

His paintings and architecture underline his views against standardisation. They reflect strong individualism, utilising bright colours, rejecting straight lines and reconciling humans with nature.
